‘True Detective: Night Country’ Premieres to Over 2 Million Viewers

True Detective: Night Country” brought in over 2 million viewers Sunday night when it dropped its first episode on HBO and Max.

The Season 4 premiere of HBO’s crime series “True Detective” showed strong performance, “despite airing alongside a close NFL Wild Card game,” according to Warner Bros. Discovery. “Night Country,” which stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, boasts a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 70 reviews.

For comparison, the second season of “The White Lotus” premiered to 1.5 million viewers across platforms, while the first episode of “Euphoria” Season 2 delivered 2.4 million cross platform viewers. Those seasons of “The White Lotus” and “Euphoria” ultimately tallied around 15.5 million and 19.5 million viewers per episode, respectively.

The official logline of “Night Country” reads, “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselve and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

In addition to Foster and Reis, the six-episode season stars Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc and John Hawkes.

Showrunner, writer and director Issa López serves as an executive producer alongside Foster, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Nic Pizzolatto and Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak for PASTEL. Producers include Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford and Sam Breckman.

New episodes of “Night Country” air on HBO and Max on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET.
