Iginio Straffi, creator of the six teenage fairies in the hit “Winx Club” TV franchise, is launching a new animated series titled “Mermaid Magic” that will drop globally on Netflix on Aug. 22.

Created and produced by Straffi’s Italy-based Rainbow studio, “Mermaid Magic” is penned by U.S. head writers Rich Burns and Nancy Cohen, known for their work on DreamWorks Animation’s “Spirit Riding Free,” and showrunner Guy Bar’ely, whose credits include “Minions” and “Kung Fu Panda.”

The CG-animated series is produced by Rainbow and its Canada-based VFX animation studio Bardel.

Set in the underwater world of Mertropia, “Mermaid Magic” follow the adventures of “warrior mermaids” Princess Merlinda and her inseparable friends Sasha and Nerissa who emerge from the sea and embark on an epic journey to battle the wicked pirate Barbarossa, “who is draining the ocean’s magic,” as the provided synopsis puts it. “The series provides a dazzling blend of magic, action, humor, and emotion. It also shines a spotlight on crucial issues like ocean conservation,” according to promotional materials.

“’Mermaid Magic’ combines extraordinary elements offering viewers original stories whose protagonists are mermaids, who have always been in the dreams of the collective imagination and who reach the public thanks to a great emotional characterisation,” said Straffi in the statement.

“For the first time, we will follow the adventures of real warrior sirens, ready to defend the seas thanks to the magic and strength of their friendship,” added the Rainbow chief, noting that the studio has invested heavily in this new production “to create a story of exceptional quality and with aspirational themes and values for our time.”
